When Lewis & Clark reached this point on the Missouri River, they must have been jubilant. Having just portaged 18 miles around the Great Falls, foretold by the Hidatsas Indians as a sign of being on the right path, they were now back in the boat, off their feet, and confident of reaching the Pacific.
