State Flag:
Designed by a local artist, this flag honors the state's Native American heritage. The blue background comes from a flag carried by Choctaw soldiers during the Civil War. The center shows an Osage warrior battle shield made of buffalo hide and decorated with eagle feathers and two symbols of peace: the Calumet peace pipe and the olive branch. The crosses on the shield are Native American signs for stars.

Born November 5, 1879 in what was then called Indian Territory, Will Rogers was an actor and a political humorist who used his rope twirling as part of his act in vaudeville. The stage act soon turned into a weekly syndicated column, poking fun of government and politicians. At the age of 56 he died in a plane crash on his way to the Orient.
