State of Virginia

OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

George Allen

State of Virginia

A MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR GEORGE ALLEN

On behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, I invite you to experience the numerous attractions the Old Dominion has to offer.

As the birthplace of our nation with the founding of Jamestown in 1607, Virginia is where you will discover the true spirit of the United States of America. Whether strolling through one of our 26 State Parks, visiting Colonial Williamsburg or experiencing the rich historical heritage of the State Capitol in Richmond, you are sure to enjoy the history and hospitality of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is also home to many and varied scenic getaways. The soaring peaks of the Blue Ridge and the Appalachians, the rolling hills of the Piedmont and the .shores of the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay all offer a world of opportunities to explore and enjoy.

Virginia has been home to many Revolutionary statesman, including George Mason, Richard Henry Lee, Patrick Henry and George Wythe, and Confederate leaders, including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and J.E.B. Stuart. The Commonwealth has also been home to several American patriots -- Matthew Fontain Maury, the Pathfinder of the Seas; Cyrus McCormick, inventor of the grain reaper; John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States; and Sam Houston, the first president of the Texas Republic.

The Commonwealth of Virginia is also the birthplace of eight United States Presidents, more than any other State. George Washington. Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson were all born in Virginia.

No matter where you travel in Virginia, you are sure to find hospitable and courteous folks who will make your visit an enjoyable one. For more information, you may visit the Virginia Tourism Corporation's website at http://www.VIRGINIA.org.

I hope you will have the opportunity to visit the many historic sites and beautiful natural attractions found in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
