Robert E. Lee Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, VA

In 1862 Lee's 1000-acre family estate was confiscated and made into a national cemetery. An 1882 Supreme Court judgment returned the estate to Lee's son, but with his golden mansion amidst a sea of death, he sold it back to the US, making the home a memorial to his father.
