State Capitol, Columbia, SC

Designed in 1855, construction ceased during the Civil War, and though cannonballs pierced the half-built Capitol, work slowly continued until completion in 1907. The original architect may have been clairvoyant having designed 52 front steps for the building that took 52 years to complete.
