Founded in 1854 by Massachusetts abolitionists, Lawrence was the hotbed of the pro- and anti-slavery fighting which labeled the territory, "Bleeding Kansas." Reduced to ashes in the Civil War, Lawrence rebuilt to the Victorian beauty seen today.
