Two historic events occurred on the white-columned portico of this 1851 Capitol: Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America, gave his inaugural address in 1861, and 104 years later Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. concluded his Selma-to-Montgomery Civil Rights march.
