Two deserts meet at Joshua Tree National Park: the low Colorado and the high Mojave, sole host to the unique Joshua tree, so named by Mormon emigrants in reference to the Biblical Joshua's hands raised in prayer. Although renowned explorer John Fremont called it "the most repulsive tree in the vegetable kingdom," Joshua's seeds, flowers and leaves fed and sheltered generations of grateful Native Americans and westward pioneers.
